Is Grape Seed Extract Good for the Liver?

Sep. 22, 2022

Grape seed extract ( Vitis vinifera ) is a natural substance available in the form of capsules and tablets. It is usually derived from grape seeds supplied by winemakers. Grapes and grape seed extract (GSE) have a long history of culinary and medicinal use.

Various parts of the grape have been used for medicinal purposes since ancient Greek times. There are reports that the ancient Egyptians and Europeans also used grapes and grape seeds.

Grape Seed Extract (GSE) is a dietary supplement made by removing, drying, and crushing the bitter seeds of grapes. Grape seeds are rich in antioxidants, including phenolic acids, anthocyanins, flavonoids, and oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes (OPCs). In fact, GSE is one of the best-known sources of proanthocyanidins.

How do you consume grape seed extract?

The grape seed extract is usually obtained as a dietary supplement in liquid, tablet, or capsule form. Energizing your body with grape seed extract on a daily basis can promote long-term health and wellness, but it is not the be-all and end-all of your health. The grape seed extract is particularly effective when taken in conjunction with other nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidant supplements.

The Benefits of Grape Seed Extract

1. May protect your liver

Your liver plays an important role in detoxifying harmful substances introduced into your body through drugs, viral infections, pollutants, alcohol, etc. GSE appears to have a protective effect on your liver.

In test tube studies, GSE reduced inflammation, recycled antioxidants, and prevented free radical damage during toxin exposure. The liver enzyme alanine aminotransferase (ALT) is a key indicator of hepatotoxicity, which means that its levels are elevated when the liver is continuously damaged.

In one study, 15 people with NAFLD and subsequent high ALT levels received GSE for 3 months. liver enzymes were monitored monthly and the results were compared with 2 g of vitamin C per day. After 3 months, ALT decreased by 46% in the GSE group, while there was little change in the vitamin C group.

2. Good for diabetics

There is evidence that grape seed extract is beneficial for people with diabetes. a review of 15 small studies in 2020 found that grape seed extract reduced fasting blood glucose but did not affect HbA1c (a more accurate, long-term measure of blood glucose levels).

Another review found that it also improved LDL and total cholesterol and blood pressure. A grape seed extract has a blood thinning effect and it may affect liver function and drug metabolism. Always talk to your healthcare provider before use.

3. May reduce oxidative damage

Elevated levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol in the blood are a known risk factor for heart disease. Oxidation of LDL cholesterol significantly increases this risk and plays a central role in atherosclerosis or the build-up of fatty plaques in the arteries.

In several animal studies, GSE supplementation was found to reduce LDL oxidation triggered by a high-fat diet. A number of studies on humans have shown similar results. When eight healthy people ate a high-fat meal, 300 mg of GSE inhibited fat oxidation in the blood, compared to a 150% increase in those who did not take GSE.

In another study, 61 healthy adults taking 400 mg of GSE had a 13.9% reduction in oxidized LDL. However, a similar study was unable to replicate these results. In addition, a study of 87 individuals undergoing cardiac surgery found that 400 mg of GSE taken the day before surgery significantly reduced oxidative stress. Therefore, GSE may prevent further heart damage.

4. Support your brain as you age

The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of flavonoids are thought to delay or reduce the onset of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

One of the components of GSE is gallic acid, which has been shown in animal and laboratory studies to inhibit the formation of protofibrils from beta-amyloid peptides. Clusters of beta-amyloid proteins in the brain are characteristic of Alzheimer's disease.

Animal studies have found that GSE can prevent memory loss, improve the cognitive status and antioxidant levels in the brain, and reduce brain damage and amyloid clusters. A 12-week study of 111 healthy older adults found that 150 mg of GSE per day improved attention, language, and immediate and delayed memory.
