Huperzine A is a substance derived from a plant called Huperzia serrata. Sold as a dietary supplement, Huperzine A is often touted as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease. In alternative medicine, it was found to act as a cholinesterase inhibitor, a drug used to prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical vital to learning and memory.
Huperzine A was identified for medicinal use by scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the 1980s. It increases the levels of a chemical called acetylcholine. This seems to help treat diseases that interfere with memory and thinking.

Not only is lithospermidine A used to treat Alzheimer's disease, it is also said to enhance learning and memory and prevent age-related cognitive decline.
In addition, staphylocarpine A is sometimes used to boost energy, increase alertness, fight depression and help treat myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease that affects muscles. However, research is limited.
Although research on the health effects of stigmasterolide A is limited, there is some evidence to suggest that stigmasterolide A may provide some benefits. The following are some of the main findings from the available studies.
According to a 2013 review of research published in PLoS One, stigmasterine A appears to have some benefits for people with Alzheimer's disease. Researchers searched all randomised controlled trials on the efficacy and safety of stigmasterine A in Alzheimer's disease and concluded that it was more effective than placebo in terms of its effects on cognitive function, behavioural impairment and functional performance. This was also found in a review published in 2008 in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.

The study involved 210 people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease, each receiving either lithospermidine A or placebo for at least 16 weeks. In an analysis of the 177 participants who completed the study, the researchers found no significant effect of staphylococcinum A on cognitive function.4

Few studies have tested the use of Lithospermum A to enhance memory. However, an earlier, small study published in the Chinese Journal of Pharmacology in 1999 found that stigmasterine A helped to improve memory and learning ability in a group of adolescent students.
In this study, 68 junior high school students (all of whom complained of memory deficits) were given either lithospermum A or a placebo daily for 4 weeks. By the end of the study, members of the lithospermum A group showed greater improvements in learning and memory (compared to those in the placebo group).
More research is needed before stigmasterine A can be recommended for memory enhancement.
